Went out for some beers post moving with guys from college. You can usually expect similar conversations at these affairs- they’re always hilarious but not generally the most challenging/informative etc. ( But hey it’s a bar I can’t really ask for more than entertaining) Regardless ended up having a brief conversation about what I was hoping to do over the next year- being that I just moved and I’m consistently bored at work. One of the guys is at a similar spot in life and he asked me well what makes you the happiest. I expected to get the whole speil of “turn what makes you happy into a career” Instead, after I told him what makes me happiest (getting to the top of a rock face, biking down a huge hill, climbing to a lookout point and so on), he told me to imagine that feeling you get from that and try to apply it to other things in life - Obviously you can’t always have that top of the mountain feeling; but in everyday life- if you can choose to sit in front of the tv or pick an activity that might edge you closer to that amazing feeling, choose the other activity. If you can start something new that gives you that feeling- go for it. and for god sakes stop doing things that give other people their top of the mountain feeling if it just leaves you feeling crummy. And this sounds so straightforward and obvious but I think lately I’ve been forgetting. I have all these things I feel that I should do and I’ve forgotten to step back and reflect on what little things actually brings me happiness in everyday life.
Well cheers to trying to take some common sense life advice on this lovely friday.
